As I mentioned earlier, I will be
traveling to Switzerland for 10 weeks. But where exactly in Switzerland
will I be? Well, for 10 weeks, I will be in Lugano – a city near the border of
Italy.
There is a school in Lugano called TASIS, which is where I will
be student teaching. TASIS stands for The
American School In Switzerland. Because TASIS is an American school, I do
not have to speak another language when I teach there. I will be able to speak
and teach in English, but the children in my classroom will most likely speak
more than one language.

I am excited to share I will be teaching first grade while in
Switzerland and then kindergarten once I am back in Fargo, ND. Last year, there
were children from Russia, Italy, and a couple other countries in the classroom – making for a
diverse group of students. I cannot wait to see who will be in my class this
year!

Basic Info about
Switzerland
- Switzerland is landlocked by five different
countries. It is bordered on the north by Germany, on the east by Austria and
Liechtenstein, on the south by Italy, and on the west by France.
- The capital of Switzerland is Bern, but the
largest city is Zürich.
- There are more than 1,500 lakes in Switzerland.
- The population of Switzerland is almost 8
million people.
- The official language of Switzerland is NOT
Swiss (that’s not even a language). The people of Switzerland either speak
German, French, Italian, and/or Romansh – depending on the region in which they
are living. Because of where I will be, Italian will be the language I will most
frequently hear.
- The currency used in Switzerland is the Swiss
franc, which currently equals approximately 1.07 US dollars.
- Switzerland is famous for its chocolate,
watches, banking, and the Alps.
- Christianity is the predominant religion, with Roman
Catholics and Protestants making up the majority of the population.
- Switzerland receives a lot of tourists each year
due to its beautiful scenery, clean air, sports, hiking opportunities, and much
more.
